I just used GeneratePress to launch a new website, and I have to say that I wasn’t impressed. Figured I’d mention it here in case I’m overlooking something.
GeneratePress has come up as I was looking into “basic” themes. I can see how it would be great for someone who doesn’t know much about front-end development, as it already comes with a fair amount of built-in styling/CSS. As someone who does know front-end development pretty well, I prefer PHPing a custom theme with BlankSlate or Underscores so I can do my own designing.
I’m inclined to relaunch the site with BlankSlate or Underscores, but going to wait to see how GeneratePress does site performance-wise.

You didn’t say at all WHY you’re not impressed and there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from doing your own designing with GeneratePress.
Make a child theme and go to town.
Do you use free or premium GP? Elements in Premium give you another level of control (https://docs.generatepress.com/article/elements-overview/). With the addition of GenerateBlocks you have full-blown front and back end editor/customizer.
GP is good performant, probably the best of hybrid themes. My favourite.
Underscore is another beast; full control in dev hands. I like it, very much. If you prefer bootstrap, Understrap is also worth investigating.
