We recently posted a job listing for a remote intermediate WordPress developer.
A good fit for us is:
\- someone to use existing plugins and themes to build WordPress websites
\- someone to build basic custom plugins and child theme
\- someone handy with PHP, CSS and JS in the WP ecosystem
When we did this a few months ago, we sent out a link to a test for developers to complete. Unfortunately, we realized later on that most applicants, including the one we onboarded at the end, AI-generated their responses. Some of the previous questions we asked involved site migration, and high level questions such as the most technically challenging front end or data project they worked on in WordPress, and why. (ChatGPT’s quite good and spitting out good answers to these.)
I want to avoid asking questions about code since that’s fruitless. I want to also avoid concepts that can easily be searched online or even AI generated on a live call.
Got any suggestions for good questions to ask? Thanks in advance, all.
PS: Are questions about performance troubleshooting such as poor FCP, LCP, and TBT numbers valid to ask?

Depends on expectations, and level of expertise. Id at least expect them to know what the WP-CLI and API is, not necessarily have used it, but know what it does and their purposes.
On the topic of page optimization, perhaps a trap question can be used if youre nefarious? Like which has the most impact on First Byte; images or assets.
