So I have basic experience in dealing with WordPress sites. Plug-ins etc, mainly making sure things are working.
My mum is involved in a small local charity and their web guy has been less than charitable. Charging them $500 per year for SSL certificates, billing for time when nothing was actually done ok the site etc. the latest is another large bill for work that ‘needs doing ASAP’
They’ve decided to part ways, and won’t be able to get a new designer / web dev until there is been a board meeting etc. So I said we will find a cheaper host, free SSL etc just to keep it live until a new company can do things in the best way.
The precious web dev has sent over a bunch of files (SQL) and said that the site it’s still using php 5.9.
My question is – what, if anything, do I need to do with these files to keep the site live for another month or so? I assumed he would hand over login details and we could run with it, as the charity have been paying for GoDaddy hosting (through the previous web dev) and everything should just keep on running.
Anything technical I need to do? Or just not touch is for fear of breaking something and reach out to somebody who does know what they’re doing?

You need 2 things – the website files, containing the WP Core files/folders, wp-admin, wp-includes, wp-content – and inside wp-content are all your themes, plugins, uploads. Then you also need the SQL. Ideally the SQL file should be a single file, but I’ve heard of people supplying several files.
For hosting options, check out r/webhosting – avoid godaddy, bluehost, hostgator, don’t be tempted by their cheap pricing – you’ll pay for it with downtime and slow speeds.
