Help integrating Google Tag Manager GA4 into a fairly locked down wordpress environment

[ad_1]

Hi, I am curious if anyone has any tips or tricks for migrating from Google Universal Analytics to GA4 on their wordpress site.

The two big issues are that I operate a wordpress site at a university that doesn’t allow unapproved plug-ins and also does not give us access to update php files within themes so I can’t just drop them into the theme’s header and footer.

Is there any possible way to install the necessary Google Tags to my site or am I out of luck?

One possibility that I am going to possibly try is, I have access to the Plug-in Toolset, which features a section that allows the entering of javascript, does that sound like a possible avenue to allow me to put the Google script tag in a block or Toolset view and then just place that view on each page hidden from the user?

Thanks for any feedback or possible solutions as I work through this.

  1. You can integrate it with script tags in a header tag, but you need to do it on each page manually.

  2. If you don’t have the ability to edit the theme and insert code yourself, then surely someone does? Have you tried contacting that person and getting them to insert the code that Google provides to install Tag Manager?

Then, once Tag Manager is installed you won’t need to do anything with that code again since everything will be managed from within Tag Manager.

That’s the easiest/best solution, and if the person you speak to that’s controlling the site states they can’t do that then they shouldn’t be in charge of a website / you should go to the next person up instead.
