For Context the people who approched me do not have any clue about hosting or domains. They asked me to make the best call.
I can either develop it entirely myself using react, but i do not know much about hosting in a custom domain and search engine optimization?(i think that’s their main goal for the site to show up someone searches for it) when we host it ourselves.
or I can design it using wordpress or wix. The company is asking for an estimate of how much it would cost them, what should i go for? which is better or cheaper?

Go wordpress.org way, I’d you can self/shared host
Buy a domain and hosting from Namecheap, and install WordPress on it.
After that, you can use Elementor builder to build the website and can install the SEO plugin and do the SEO OnPage and after that do OffPage (link building)
I’ve done some NGO web site work.
Use some kind of CMS. Do as simple a job as you possibly can. Don’t stick build it. Especially not with code that requires tooling, like React.
Why? Maintaining their sites and keeping them up to date is very very difficult for smaller NGOs. Even if all they have to do is update their email addresses and post their annual reports. You may be able to assist them for a decade or two, but most NGOs last at least that long.
The one-stop shops like Wix and Squarespace have a lot to recommend them
So does WordPress.org on a decent hosting provider, with mainstream, updated, themes and plugins.
One small tip. Pay upfront for as many years of domain registration as you are allowed. 9, I think. Then every five years renew it to the max. Cybersquatter creeps will steal the domain name the millisecond it expires, if you let that happen.
Use WPMUDEV.com Kinsta or WPEngine. WordPress.org is still too restrictive. Register domain with Namecheap or cloudflare.
