I’d like to start making high-quality e-commerce websites for clients using WordPress, but I’ve noticed that big companies don’t seem to use WooCommerce on their websites. Is WooCommerce mostly for new businesses? I see Shopify being used more often.
I want to learn the necessary skills to be able to create expensive e-commerce sites. What is a realistic roadmap for me? I already know JavaScript, PHP, and React. Should I focus on Shopify instead?
Thank you

Large corporations build their own custom software. They don’t use Shopify.
You say you know JavaScript, PHP and React so you’d be using those.
Large companies buy systems from other big companies and/or use in-house development or SaaS software from big players.
I have seen most of the big businesses using custom coded websites or magento
Shopify is basically for merch. If you want subscriptions, build your own bundle, buy 2 get 1 free you can build that out in woo pretty good, but it takes dev time. They’re called customers because they need a custom solution I guess.
I have seen high quality sites with Woocommerce, it depends a lot on the optimization for it and for many products it tends to slow down.
Prestashop and Magento are specialized e-commerce for medium-sized companies.
Odoo that incorporates the complete ERP is a very good option for medium and large companies with many products
I’ve built something fairly large in Laravel
Anyone who thinks Shopify isn’t for massive companies only needs to look at a few huge e-com brands to see that they are, in fact, Shopify. Think: Gymshark, Mattel, Fashion Nova, Kylie Cosmetics, among others.
These are huge (by product count and revenue) and they are all Shopify. They may be headless, but it’s still Shopify powering their business.
That being said, I would argue there are more major brands building bespoke platforms/integrations than there are using Shopify in some capacity.
