I have been doing WordPress website for clients over the years and have been using smtp for email to their own mailboxes. How do you do it and what smtp provider do you use?

Forminator + WP Mail SMTP + Postmark
SendWP is a nice solution in this space!
Gravity Forms > Post SMTP > Sendgrid. Any form tool would work of course and then Sendgrid is about $89/mo but I have hundreds of sites linked through it. Been incredibly reliable and tells me why emails voice or are blocked when they fail to show up in an inbox. Having an explanation is invaluable because so much in the email world can seem like it has no reasoning or there are gremlins.
I second that comment on Gravity Forms. Also Contact Form 7 is super easy to use and free.
Yaysmtp and mailjet. They’re great and free if you’re doing low volume sending.
PostSMTP + Mailgun free.
Mailgun + wp mail smtp
I was using Post SMTP, but it breaks with every other update.
