(How) Does it work for you to use ready made themes (Astra, Neve, GP, Kadence) for client projects vs. building it yourself with builders?

For quite some time I am seeking answers for this and probably there is just no answer but different experiences.

I never used the popular themes for client projects.

I used them for my own hobby projects. It’s just easy to use, ready made, when I use it for myself I don’t care if something doesn’t work with the theme. I accept it because I know how much faster I am. The result looks professional, even though I didn’t need to put much effort into it.

But somehow I can’t imagine using them for client projects. Why? Because clients always have special requests. In the end I feel with a theme I am more locked down to the features it offers.

Then there is this argument that the client should get something unique.

It also “feels” more professional to do it properly from scratch, instead of just jumping on the theme and a predesigned template. This would mean, research and concept period, design and style guidelines, custom templates, custom loops, custom post types if needed for more consistent layout and editability etc.

.. compared to sending the client the starter template gallery and ask them “what do you like” and just use it and swap images

How are you working with ready made themes and templates with clients?

I think I actually want to build myself from scratch but it’s just effort that often is no cash there for
