How long would you expect it to take to change a WordPress primary domain over to a new one?

Hey WordPress friends!

I’ve been asked how long it would take to change a WordPress website’s domain from the current one to a new one, as well as then change the content of the website since they’ve gone through a re-brand as well.

They have 2 domains – the current one and the new one, they were both purchased via their hosting provider – Bluehost – so the website and domains are located in the same place.

As the current website has been live for a nearly a year a 301 redirect would need to be set up for the current domain when it’s changed, and it’s currently connected to Google Analytics and Search Console so the new URL will need to be changed there as well.

Finally I have not been inside the current WordPress environment, it’s not been maintained since it went live but they said it has automatic plug in updates enabled and when inspecting the code, it is the most up to date WordPress version as well. I also believe it will need to have a back up plug in installed first and a back up taken before anything changes can be made as well.

I had said this could be a quick job or take a while depending on what I come across and they are very constrained on budget!

Thanks for any insight!

  1. I won’t give you a number since it depends on factors like the amount of content, how it’s coded and so on, but I would say in general from a couple of hours to a day.

One thing that’s important is possibly replacing the urls in content (which can be done through sql, a plugin or manually depending on the size of the page). Depending on the pagebuilder, media urls could also be “hard placed” in the database.

Just beware that google will take some days up to a couple of weeks to get the indexing of the page straight.

  2. Depending on how the site is set up, it takes a few minutes to change the primary domain, a couple of days for DNS propagation, potentially up to 2 weeks.

Setting up a 301 redirect is actually easy in that it’s automatic if you do it in the right way.

    Everything depends on details.

  3. With Better Search Replace (or WP CLI search-replace) and Cloudflare, no more than 10 minutes.
