I have been working for $80+ / hour for a couple of years with some agencies for custom WordPress theme development.
But the agencies I mostly work for are struggling to find new work for me and therefore I’m back to looking for new clients.
I have 10+ years of custom WordPress development experience. My question is, should I try to go lower and if so, how much? How much do you all charge for custom WordPress development?
I have been sending proposals on Upwork for $30 – $50 / hour. Am I supposed to try go even lower? I am kind of desperate right now but at the same time don’t want to compromise too much either because I did gain experience over the years and am good at what I do.

$55hr was the lowest I worked for, and that was more than 10 years ago.
My average was $75hr for piece work, troubleshooting and maintenance.
$125 for the first hour for emergencies.
I also offered reduced rate packages of hours in 5, 8 and 12 hour increments.
New websites were a flat fate based on agreed upon deliverables, and time frame. 50% down.

I never competed on price. I’d rather have fewer clients at full rate, than many for cheap.
