I feel confident in my ability to create and sell basic static websites. However, I’ve only had only one real client.
I have 8 templates that I built under my portfolio. They look like real businesses. But they don’t have any google maps presence or real phone numbers. Just fake numbers and addresses listed on the templates. How often do you think they will realize they are fake businesses?
For the record I don’t make any false claims on my company/portfolio website.
Thoughts on how you would proceed when future clients ask to see previous work? Bend the truth a bit or straight up just tell them they are templates? Or just leave out the fact they are templates but don’t lie?

Be upfront. Say on your website that the works are mock-ups.
You’re worrying about the wrong thing.
What are you doing to market yourself to prospective clients? Like every day, what’s on your to-do list that opens doors for more business?
If it’s just having a website with some examples, that’s not nearly going to cut it. I’ve got full on production sites and apps in my portfolio, but someone hustling on the marketing side will get more business than I do, regardless of their skill level. It’s a bit of a numbers game in that way, so you need to just be out trying to get business in intelligent ways.
There are a million designers and developers. What sets some apart from others is marketing and how much marketing of themselves they do. Development is a commodity otherwise.
You’ll be okay. If you’ve got the technical skills to back it up, who cares… sometimes we unique reasons why we don’t have the actual work product to show off (agencies, non-disclosure,etc.) so it really isn’t all that uncommon.
If, however, you’re a total idiot and can’t back it up technically, you’re doomed.
I guess, either way, you’re good to go.
