I’m a web developer not exactly familiar yet with WordPress, as I prefer custom website building. I heard that WordPress was good for quick and simple web building, though, and I was wondering how much I should charge per WordPress website. Is $300 per website too low?

Yes.
For a basic 5 page website $300 is way too low. I charge minimum $2500 for non-e-commerce websites. It really depends on the exact specifications of the project though.
I charge 75 per hour and 645 to do yearly security maintenance. I have to turn down a lot of people because my schedule is full. Charge by the hour instead of by the website and suddenly clients respect your time and make more reasonable requests. Charge by the job and suddenly nothing is quite right and you have to do everything three times until you wish to God you would never have taken the job.
That is so cheap, I’d seriously question the quality and experience of someone even tossing that number out there.
Last project I did freelance was 6 pages, no e-commerce, client wanted to use a premium theme, and I charged about $3750. Most agencies would probably have charged $5-$10k.
I don’t know how much you should charge – where do you live/ what costs do you need to cover?
How confident and skilled are you? What will you be using to build the site, what functions are required, what overheads have you to cover … so many questions, it’s not a simple answer.
