How much to charge (UK)

[ad_1]

Hi, I’ve been doing web design for a few years for small business here in the UK. I use a multi-purpose prebuilt theme, with the occasional bit of my own CSS. When I first started, I was charging £495 for up to 5 pages, then £40 per additional page; I now charge £695 for up to 5 pages, then £60 per additional page. Ecommerce and other more complex functionality from an additional £200.

Obviously I want to charge as much as possible, though I’m worried about not getting the business if I do put my prices up. So it would be useful to know how much others in the UK charge.

I’ve seen some saying just go by estimated hours x hourly rate, but my rate is £45/hr, yet when doing a full project it normally works out higher than that at £60-70/hr.

Maybe it would be better to give more bespoke prices based upon their estimated budget?

I also offer hosting and maintenance plans, which require very little work once it’s set up. I currently charge from £30/month, with most sites on that base price.

Thank you for your help.

  1. What setup do you use for Hosting / Security, and what is included in the maintenance contracts ?

  2. If you want to charge more I suggest moving away from pre-built themes and start coding your own. My prices were similar to yours but have increased 10x after learning to code.

Also, if you’re in the UK look at 20i for hosting. They’re superb.
