How small should my image files be? (From a complete novice)

Completely new to WP and safe to say I have no idea what I’m doing. I have no technical expertise and this is simply a passion project.

I’ve basically created a directory website with around 15,000 listings and it’s working quite well. There are no images on any listing… yet.

I now plan on uploading 1 image per listing and have been told that each image should be less than 100kb in size and that it should be webp format otherwise I risk slowing the website down a lot. Is this true? Any advice on how to approach this? Most of my image files are like 7-8mb at the moment.

  1. See if your images are displayed fully, maybe you are rendering them at 700×700, but the images themselves are 2000×2000, thus resizing might also be beneficial. Depending on niche quality reduction might also help a lot.
