How to create unique identifier by membership department/ group

Wondering if there is an easy way to generate an automated sequential user identifier in WordPress that also corresponds to a larger group or department a member is associated with. So like a math department might start with "MA" followed by a sequential id for the individual user. Potentially generating when a user registers on the site and indicates the department they are apart of.

I have basic WordPress skills but find I can still get quite a bit done in WP when I need to as long as it's not code;)
