Question for the WordPress community: how do I edit the site title name as it appears on Google (see image for reference) — I’ve gone to theme customizer > site title > and edited from there but it didn’t fix the issue. Any ideas?

This may also be pulling from your SEO settings. Check your page title and meta descriptions and update them based on the new name.
If you have a SEO plugin (like Yoast), see if that has any settings you need to change. If you’ve set up Google Search console you can also suggest that Google re-indexes your site, but there’s no guarantee of when they’ll do it.
Rename the post title on wordpress backend as well. If it says “home” for instance, change that to the title of the page that you want to show up on google.
The post title as in the blog post that WordPress comes default with? Or are you referring to page names of each page on the site? I notice you said home as an example.
To see the change Google will first have to re-crawl your site, which could take hours up to days. Be patient, your change probably worked.
Go on the dashboard and at the bottom: settings/general. Then theres two sections. First put a short Name straight to the point and second field use a descriptive 80ish characters.
Then install Yoast SEO and you can also go edit your meta description which is the small text below the title (160-200 char)
