How to get a local dev server going so I can practice WordPress?

[ad_1]

I want to try learning WordPress (I have some web development experience working with the MERN stack if that’s relevant) and so I want to get a local server going so I can start messing around with WordPress.

Through searching, it seems that in order to get WP running locally on my machine (Windows), I have 4 options:

* Downloading [WampServer])
* Downloading [XAMPP])
* Downloading [LocalWP])
* Running it in Docker as outlined [here])

Trying to figure out which option to use has been difficult. So far, I can’t really see any difference between the first two options, but I also can’t really find much information on either of them. For LocalWP, I’ve gathered that it’s easy to use, but incredibly slow and resource heavy. I already have Docker installed and am somewhat familiar with it, but I’m not very well-versed in it, making troubleshooting a nightmare, especially when there are problems with the *docker-compose.yml* file.

So, I’ve come here seeking counsel from my those of you who are for more qualified than I am to make this kind of decision.

  1. Local is the least difficult, by far. Yes, it’s fairly in consistent – on some PC’s it will just run like shit. In that case, check out Laragon.
