How to manage client projects

Hello fellow WPers!

My wife runs a photo restoration business and I’d like to set up a site that will allow her clients to create projects and then set preferences and upload photos on a per project basis.

I’ve run wordpress for years for blogs and even some paid member sites, but haven’t run across an obvious best practice for this.

I’m leaning towards using a post template to represent the project and then custom fields to hold the preferences and uploaded photos. But I’m curious is there is a better way to do this?
