How to modify someone else’s site with their permission?

Hi. I want to become a web/UX designer. One of my first projects is updating my friend’s business site for free. As far as I understand, he made it on wordpress.com and has paid for the domain.

What’s the best way to give his site a new face? Should I be added as an editor or something, then change it, or use a plugin to make a copy of it, change that, and send it to him? Should I just make a site and host it somewhere, then transfer the domain somehow?

Thanks for any help! I’ve been researching WordPress but haven’t found an answer to this.

  1. You should probably start playing around with WordPress installed in your own computer (look up Local by Flywheel) before experimenting on your friend’s business.

  2. Ideally, you would make a staging copy and make all of the changes there before pushing back to live. I don’t know if this is possible with wordpress.com (.org is the self-hosted version with much more control).

Also note when a separate staging site is active any changes or additions made to the live site will need to be also made on the staging copy to avoid any conflict when going live.

You will need to be added at administrator level to make UI and design changes.
