Every theme is different in how the user name is displayed. USP tries to display the submitter’s username by default, but it depends on how the theme is coded.
The one thing that you can check in the plugin that may be having an effect is the setting “Disable Replace Author”. Make sure that is disabled, and also have a look at the other “User” settings. For example “Registered Username” setting may have an effect on username display.
