How to protect a folder with a password?

I have a standalone WordPress folder and I want to password protect it using WordPress. I have considered using a plugin like PPWP – Password Protect Pages, which redirects me to the folder. However, the folder does not have any security or validation as it can be accessed by simply typing the URL domain.com/folder/.

What are my options? Currently, the folder is in the root of my WordPress installation, and I do not have the option to modify the files within the folder.
