How to put themes into columns? (they display it in the imagen but when I install it there is only 1 column)

Hi there! I am setting up a wordpress blog that I want to display into columns, but even when the two themes I was working with (video blog and VW blog magazine) have columns as a future, both of them display three columns which is what I want, when I install them and activate them it only shows 1 column.

Any ideas?
