First off, two things to clarify: 1) im not a developer, and 2) Im an employee, not a contractor or a freelancer.
A few months ago I managed to get a job through connections at a small company. We are only 7 people in total, so everyone is given multiple roles and responsibilities. My biggest role and essentially the reason why I was hired was to design, manage, and market the company website, and out of the 3 months that I have been employed, half of that time has been spent directly on that.
At first, the website was very bare bones, it was made by some freelancer during the pandemic and had nothing more than a front page and a store page with 400 or so products, without even any option to purchase anything. One and a half months later, the website is functional, It has all the features that an online store should need and around 2000 products total, but it’s still unfinished and looks terrible.
Before getting the job I knew nothing about website building and had to solve problems as I discovered them. I also had to learn other skills like copywriting and advertising, which means that many of the things that I have already done are not good enough and need to be revisited, which takes time. What’s more, is that I always feel like im putting too much effort in return for little progress. Despite there being a plugin for everything, I have to spend hours looking and searching for the ones that are both free and will work with what Im trying to do.
My employer wanted me to complete most of the website within the first month, and when he realized that this would not happen, he started giving me other roles because I was not making him any profit. He purposefully gives me other tasks instead of giving me time to work on the website because he knows that Im inexperienced and “not working efficiently” as he puts it, but still expects me to develop new features, some of which are not easy to implement in WordPress. Because this makes me feel incompetent, I cannot bring myself to directly talk to him about it. In fact, he insists that working with WordPress is easy because everything is already done there for you, there is a theme and plugin for everything for free, and that im just bad at my job.
