I have 2400 potential 404 errors. I need help

When I first launched my website, an AMP plugin inadvertently generated duplicate pages. These duplicates weren’t visible in any of the pages or post; I only became aware of them when Google Search Console indicated these URL’s weren’t indexed. Though I deactivated this plugin months back and sought assistance, no one could give me a clear resolution and it wasn’t as bad as it is now post google updates.

I integrated a redirection plugin which sent these pages to my homepage. This issue, remains persistent, even post the AMP plugin’s deactivation. Whenever I create a page, it generates a peculiar URL format like [www.example.com/topic/www.example.com]), creating mirrored versions of authentic pages. These replicas redirect to my homepage and are not indexed by Google.

WordPress support recommended disabling the redirection plugin and resubmitting a sitemap to Google. However, they were uncertain about the potential SEO ramifications of suddenly having 2,400 404 errors. How should I navigate this predicament? As of mid-August, this count was under 900 redirected pages not indexed, but following the dual core and HCU updates, there was a sharp rise to 2,400, in two distinct spikes directly attributable to these updates. I’m baffled by the whole situation but it’s evident that these updates severely impacted my traffic. Resolving this is seems like it should be my focus now for the health of my website and to optimize the crawl budget. Any advice? They mentioned i should have these pages directing to my homepage but a 404 page? I never set anything that was all the default I believe.
