I messed up

[ad_1]

I got this brilliant idea that I would try to change my website name, having no idea what I was doing. I found this little spot in wordpress (.org I believe, as I have Bluehost), where I could put in a new url for the website.

Well, now, it redirects me to this website which is “up for sale”, so it’s just some sketchy sales site.

The bad part is, I now can’t even login to wordpress at all?? When I try to login so that I can use the forums or live chat to help me, it says that my email address is unknown, although I know for a fact it’s the same one I’ve been using to login for over a year. It won’t let me use the “username” either as it says it doesn’t exist.

I know it was stupid, and I’m a noob. Please help me.

  1. Oh boy, don’t ever do that again! There’s a lot of moving parts that go into what your domain name is, it can’t just be changed willy nilly.

    Here’s what you can do:

Log in to your Bluehost account and open phpMyAdmin.

(Go to the “Advanced” tab and in the “Database” section, you should find a link to phpMyAdmin.)

In the left sidebar of phpMyAdmin, you should see a list of all your databases. Find the one associated with your WordPress site and click on it.

Inside your WordPress database, look for a table usually named ‘wp_options’. Click on the name to open it. You should see a list of various fields.

Find the ‘siteurl’ option_name and click ‘Edit’ next to it. You will be able to change the option_value to the correct URL for your website. Click ‘Go’ or ‘Save’ to confirm the change.

Do the same for the ‘home’ option_name. The ‘home’ and ‘siteurl’ values should usually be the same.

Now try to access your WordPress site and admin dashboard again.

If this doesn’t work, or you’re not comfortable doing the steps, contact Bluehost’s support. They should be able to help you sort it out.
