I need to keep a WP site without updates.

Please don’t judge me, but I need to keep a WP site without updating. It’s my parents’ business site I built using a Themeforest theme, and from my experience as things get updated, everything gradually breaks and stops working. Even if the author releases some updates, they all eventually stop doing it and remove their themes from the marketplace and then you are on your own. I am looking for a way to keep the site functional the way it is now, plugins and WP itself, but in a safe way. Is there a way to do it ? I would only need add or modify pages occasionally, maybe once a year.

  1. to set it and forget it, you would need to use a tool or plugin to turn it into static site. Keep the Actual WP install on like a local environment to do updates to it, let it create static files, and party like it’s 1999 and just upload images and static .html files

  2. If you still need to make updates to the site, then you need to keep the software up to date. It is possible to output a static version of the site, but you’d need to do that each time you add/updated content, which would be a pain.

What, specifically, breaks? Most of the time the cause of stuff breaking is because of out of date plugins or themes.

If you purchased your theme from ThemeForest, you can keep it up to date via their [Envato Market]) plugin.

If you have any plugins that are more than a year old and/or are no longer being updated/support, then you need to replace them, ASAP.
