Image optimization frustration

Hello smart people of r/Wordpress. I've watched videos and read blog posts on image optimization but I can't seem to get it right. Also, I can't seem to edit an image on my iphone and then download it Canva and have the edits saved. Even unedited photos from my phone appear less impressive in Canva. Nor can I use the Canva editing function and have anything but basic edits save. I don't *think* it's due to reducing image quality because it happens when I leave it at 100%.

Another question, if I may, is regarding webp images. My speed optimizer plug says "use webp images" but I believe I have to convert my jpeg to webp and then upload it as webp in order for that to work right?

My end goal is to be able to have crisp, sharp looking images on my blog taken from my iphone, at the right image size, with the smallest file size possible. Is there any resource you could point me to or possibly explain it to me like I am 5?

Thank you so much.

  1. One thing I just learned is that Canva reduces image quality before uploading so that explains some of my issue. I’m going to try downloading as png vs. jpg and then converting to webp and see where that gets me
