I’m kind of new at this. I’ve seen the maximum image sizes under Settings > Media (for example, 1024 by 1024 for large). Does this mean I can upload images of any size as long as I stay within those limits?
No it means that WP will take any image larger than that and make a *copy* of it that’s that size.
Related: Most themes and some plugins add additional image sizes that are made at the same time. You end up with quite an array of unused image files in your uploads directory because of it.
