I apologize in advance if this all sounds very stupid or immature, I am on the verge of having a mental breakdown while writing this and am extremely inexperienced when it comes to these kinds of things. I know this is all going to sound very idiotic but I just need to talk to someone.
I have recently been trying to make my own website, and it has all gone fairly well for the past few months. I have run into many struggles along the way but have luckily been able to solve those problems with help from very kind people from this subreddit among others.
However, I think I really screwed up this time. Yesterday when I was working on the website in wordpress, I was suddenly met by a “HTTP ERROR 500”, and was not able to access my website in any way. I couldn’t even access my WP admin dashboard so I had no idea what to do. After some googling, the only solution seemed to be to edit a bunch of really important files in an FTP client, so I tried my best to do so.
I think I have read about 50 different tutorials at this point, and I was so lost on what to do but I tried my best anyways. I tried a bunch of solutions to no avail, but then one of the solutions suggested that I edited something in my wp-config.php file, so I attempted to do so. Long story short, I double clicked the file called wp-config.php in the public\_html folder thinking that that was going to edit the file, but it ended up “transferring” (tbh I don’t even know what that means) the file. I accidentally cleared the entire file, and this all happened simply by double clicking it. I tried to manually recover it by using the wp-sample-config php file but of course I failed miserably.
To summarize: Trying to solve one problem ended up giving me a million more, and it’s all so overwhelming and disheartening. I just feel so defeated and sad over this, it feels like I have lost everything forever. I guess I could continue trying to recover the wp-config.php file, but everything seems so extremely difficult to me that I just want to cry.
I know that it might be impossible to give me advice on how to solve this, but any comforting words are greatly appreciated. Is wordpress development this frustrating for anyone else?
