Is BuddyPress, BuddyBoss, or even WordPress the right solution for a social/member network?

Hello everyone,

I built my first WordPress site almost 20 years ago and I’m currently undecided if WordPress is the right platform for my next project.

I run a community group on Facebook for saltwater aquariums – and that in itself has a lot of issues. Most people use the community group to buy/sell/trade their fish and corals, while others look to it for Q&A, and others to showcase their aquariums.

We currently use Facebook groups – and I’d like to move off of FB for a variety of reasons:

1. you don’t “own” your group on FB, and they can pull the plug anytime
2. we’ve been shutdown a few times by FB whenever they change their policies – which now includes, no selling of livestock!
3. FB is not really good for Q&A. The same Q&As are asked continuously which can annoy some people.

What Facebook does well:

1. everyone has it (older community)

What we’d like that Facebook does not currently do:

1. each person can have their own aquarium “profile” – showcasing photos of their tanks
2. each person can also have a section dedicated to their own buy/sell list
3. a dedicated FAQ section

So, the question to you is, is WordPress the right platform for us? If so, would you use something like Buddypress or BuddyBoss?

Much thanks for your help!
