Is it bad to share cookies on all subdomains?

ok, so i basically got thrown into being the IT guy for my party’s site and i’ve just been figuring stuff out as i go. our site is and i noticed a few days ago that doesn’t automatically redirect there, so i was gonna try to figure out how to set a 301 redirect (i believe that’s the name) from the latter to the former, but then i wondered if it’s better for SEO to use WWW in the primary domain or not, so i googled it, thinking this was a relatively benign question and … holy shit, was i wrong.

from what i can tell, the main drawback of not using WWW in the primary domain’s that you can’t restrict cookies to your root domain, right? i still don’t even fully understand what that means, but it seems to imply that not having the WWW shares the cookies between all subdomains, so my ultimate question now is: is that bad? is there a reason i’d wanna be able to restrict cookies to the root domain or not share cookies between all subdomains? i’ve been sporadically googling this for like 3 days and can’t find a clear answer. i understand there might need to be a lot of technical jargon involved to give a proper answer to this, but please try your best to explain it like i’m 5 lol i basically don’t understand any of this.
