Just like the title asks, Is there a way to learn WordPress for free? I have tried following a few Youtube and LinkedIn free courses but I hit a roadblock at the beginning of the course when they introduce webhosting and domains and then proceed to explain students need to sign up with a host and create a domain name and pay for them in order to follow the course. Help

Yeah. It’s called Google, Local for WP and a theme.

Localhost environment.
Those courses aren’t very good if they’re starting off by encouraging people to purchase a web hosting plan. Maybe they’re affiliated with those web hosting companies to sell their product on the course. Good that you’re asking for suggestions elsewhere instead of just following what they say and paying for the plan.
If you want to build your own WP site, then buying a domain and hosting becomes kind of necessary, unless you are okay with [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com)
There are a lot of good videos on Youtube that teach beginners, and then there are tutorials for just about anything that you can find by Googling.
You can also install WP on local like Bluesix suggested using LocalWP – and then you take it from there. Start to self learn it, create one page or post at a time, whenever you have a question go on Youtube or Google to search for answers.
While answering your question I realized how intimidating and daunting it must be for a newbie to learn WordPress on his own :O
