Is there a way to make the WordPress.com UI more like a custom installation?

[ad_1]

Long time WordPress user here, and college instructor. I’ve recommended WordPress.com frequently to my web & design students over the past decade, but some of the more recent changes have made editing and backend navigation very unintuitive. In a recent CMS project, many have opted to use Wix or Google Sites instead. They’ve found WordPress too confusing, which was never the case previously.

Is there a way to make the WordPress.com UI more like that of custom installation from WordPress.org? Something with a dedicated button that returns to the Dashboard, and a way to edit menus via “Appearance?”

Any advice/tips are greatly appreciated!

  1. Does WordPress.com not have the standard admin tool bar (pretty sure it does)? And it certainly has the Appearance menu.

Perhaps you’re using the twentytwentythree theme which does not have those features. Change the theme to anything else eg 2021 and install the Classic Editor plugin and you’ll see the old ui.
