Hi guys,
I’ve recently been pursuing an idea I had for a third party platform/application. The app serves as a platform to connect those providing a service and those in need of the service. For example, connecting tutors to struggling students. Upwork is a similar example.
The main functionalities of the app will include user registration/sign-in, a reviews system, a communication system, and a payment system.
Do you guys think WordPress can handle and build a platform of this nature? Or would I be better off going with custom web dev?

Yes, WP is fine for this. There are several plugins that can do what you’re looking for.
It can yes, you can build on top of WordPress or utilize a plugin and make customizations to suit your needs. I’ve worked on something similar in the past.
It depends on the amount of resources you want to throw at this project but I’d probably build a custom web app for it and I’d lean towards laravel.
