I am looking for a service where I can build just a simple static one/two page business card type webpage for free or on the cheap? Is this something I can do with WordPress? I plan to buy a domain through a domain name service separately. I don’t want ads to appear either (are ads inescapble for WordPress free version?)
Open to other suggestions. Thanks in advance!

No need for WordPress there. A simple HTML file will do the Trick.
