@murpheus the Custom Login URL module actually will redirect back to the login form without displaying any error message when the wrong username / password is entered.
So, “ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.” must be coming from elesewhere in your site. Do you have another plugin that modifies the login page / form / flow / behaviour? e.g. security plugins.
ASE’s Limit Login Attempts module, when enabled, will modify the error message to be “Error: Invalid username or incorrect password.”
@murpheus you can test ASE’s default behaviour by using a temporary, fresh site at instawp.com.

Hi
I am using Wordfence so the authentication may be something to do with this but deactivating ASE does then actually show “ERROR: The username or password you entered is incorrect. Lost your password?”
I have enabled Limit Login Attempts and it does now show “Error: Invalid username or incorrect password.”
Thanks
@murpheus great to hear that. Marking this resolved then.
