Will preface – my strengths are content and SEO, I hate the technical side.
Due to hating the technical side, I tend to avoid it whenever possible. I keep things simple. I’ve kept an email signup at the bottom of each post, with minimal results so far.
I’ve recently had a tick-up in the traffic, so now facing the realization that I need to do something to TRY to collect some email subscribers. So, figured I would turn to the group for some help.

CURRENT “SETUP”:
I use Newspaper theme, if that’s helpful. The newsletter signup at the end of the articles is currently using WPFormsLite. Why WPFormsLite – i have no clue why I initially set up with them. I am assuming it was suggested somewhere online, and free.
I also noticed that MailerLite plugin is installed, but doesn’t seem to be set up. I have absolutely no clue why it’s there lol.

IDEAL SETUP:
I obviously want the most effective signup prompt to get the most users possible to convert, be least intrusive user experience, and most cost-effective or free. I know that’s asking for a lot or the impossible…
1) Since I have already tried the least intrusive method, which doesn’t seem effective, I am willing to bump it up a little. And use the dreaded popup. I am not willing to have it popup immediately. An exit popup seems to be the compromise.
Ideally I would setup something at exit. But I would LOVE it if I could somehow get feedback fromt he readers first. like “hey, before you leave – did you find the article helpful? with a thumbs up and thumbs down option to click.
If they thumbs down, I would ask if they mind providing feedback to make it better. If they thumbs up, then I would ask if they want to sign up for the newsletter, or share the article with someone via email/social.
2) Another option would be to not wait until they exit. But as the reader scrolls. It is safe to assume someone that goes to the article and seconds later leaves isn’t going to sign up to be a subscriber. Instead, someone that reads halfway through the article is probably thousands of times more likely… So maybe a popup halfway through with the above ideas?
Someone that read the entire article I would assume is by far the most likely to subscribe. Any suggestions on how to go after them the most?
3) I could always put my bottom email signup option onto the sidebar, so it’s always there, but I find sidebars distracting personally.

**That’s everything that i can think of. Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, tips/tricks, or thoughts???**
Thank in advance!!!

Using an exit-intent popups that are triggered when the user moves their cursor towards the close button or the back button, indicating that they are about to leave the page. You can use this type of popup to ask the user if they found the article helpful and if they want to sign up for your newsletter before they leave.
As you mentioned, you could also consider using a scroll-triggered popup that appears after the user has read a certain percentage of the article. This could be a good way to catch the attention of engaged readers who are more likely to sign up for your newsletter.
Instead of using a popup, you could also consider adding an opt-in form directly within the content of your post. This could be a more subtle way to encourage readers to sign up for your newsletter.
