Losing visitors due to links randomly leading to “Page not found”

[ad_1]

I have noticed that sometimes following a link to a blog post from my homepage will suddenly lead me to a “Page not found” but a couple of minutes later it will work just fine.
(The link paths are not wrong, they are auto-generated from the blog posts).

Today, I took a closer look at my Google Analytics and inspected a visitors path who visited a couple of pages until he reached a “Page not found” by following a link (that was correct) from the homepage twice until he gave up and bounced.

This is happening at random and not all the time, so I can’t pinpoint what is causing it.
I am suspecting slow server performance, but why does it lead to a “Page not found”?
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
