My company is working on building a member portal on our website. We’re looking for members to be able to sign up/in, pay, access gated content, and see others who have signed up. We’d also like members to be able to hide themselves from the rest of the group if they want.
Our web dev insists that MP can’t manage the gated content and the hide your info feature and we’d need some type of additional forum plug-in. He also says there aren’t any out of the box integrations between plug-ins so he’ll have to build the integrations between MP and whatever else we pick for the forum features.
Is it true that plug-ins don’t integrate at all? Or at least not with MP? That feels like a billion dollar market.
Any help is very much appreciated.

I would say he’s right and wrong. Many of the plugins can easily be integrated with each other but at a very base level. It’s when you’re trying to use more complex integrations that the plugins don’t work as well with each other out of the box and need to do more building to make them work with each other at a higher level.
I think MemberPress likely has these features and is integrated with bbPress or BuudyBoss or whatever you might use for forums. Even so, there is some work configuring and setting this stuff up. It’s a lot of moving pieces for a website.
That said, you might want to check out Paid Memberships Pro. Disclosure, I’m one of the cofounders.
It’s free. It has a member Directory addon that is premium but can be found on GitHub for free to try out. There is a profile setting for members to opt out of the directory. I know a future (couple months or so) update will make it default to leaving folks out of the directory and have a few more privacy features for folks.
