Hi @baxter89 – sure, you can place your navigation menu wherever you like. I’d suggest checking out this tutorial about building a sidebar in the Site Editor. You can then place a Navigation block in the sidebar.
The Navigation block also has an option for the menu be displayed vertically, as you can see in the Orientation settings area:
