Migrating a GoDaddy website builder to WordPress help.

[ad_1]

Hey everyone, I’m a bit confused. So my company used the GoDaddy Website builder to create and host their website. We are wanting to move over to WordPress because of how limited the GoDaddy builder is. But from what I’ve read it seems like a have to essentially remake the site using WordPress and it get a new host because the host is attached to the GoDaddy builder?

**Long story short:** Can I just keep the hosting plan and domain name from the GoDaddy site and switch to using WordPress?

Also, I’m sure you can tell but I’m a total beginner for website building.

  1. You can keep the domain registration at GoDaddy. You’ll *probably* be able to keep the hosting plan with them as well depending on the plan. You’ll definitely have to rebuild the site.

  2. You can’t migrate GD builder other than creating a new website. You can keep the domain on GD and use wordpress services, or, just install WordPress on your current GD hosting

  3. The hosting is probably already pre-paid and they are not keen on refunds but it depends on when you started the plan. The domain is yours Al’s long as you continue to pay for it. You need to get new hosting, or stay with goDaddy hosting and then do a new website using WordPress. This will require a new install of WP and will most like remove the olde site unless you develop locally and then migrate once you have the WP site completed. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any follow up questions. Good luck.

  4. Have a client doing this right now.

No you cannot migrate from GD (Goddamn) Builder yo WP.

No you cannot use the page builder hosting. You need to spin up a WP Managed hosting product for WordPress.

Yes, you can leave your domain, email service, etc intact. When your new WP site is ready to go live, you will just point the DNS to it.

My client is staying with GoDaddy so they can get the credit from the GD Builder account applied to their WP account. They paid in advance for it.

Hope this helps! Another reason to stay away from proprietary systems like GD Builder, SquareSpace or Wix. They all make it a hassle to migrate away.

  5. What u/Breklin76 says. You’ll need to rebuild the site since GoDaddy’s site builder isn’t compatible with anything else. You’ll also have to move to hosting that can support WordPress.

It might not have been as clear that while it’s ok to hero your domaine name registered with GoDaddy, as long as you’re moving away from their site builder consider moving away from from their hosting too.

Domain registration and hosting are two separate things. You can be registered in one place and hosted somewhere else.

Meanwhile, GoDaddy hosting is either drastically underpowered or expensive or (when you add up all the necessary upcharges) both.
