Migrating a large e-commerce website.

[ad_1]

I'm working on a large WordPress website with WooCommerce for e-commerce. The site currently has 13,000 products and takes about 120GB of storage. Our goal is to give ti a new UI and integrate it with their ERP (Odoo).

The new website is ready, and we're preparing for launch. We've already imported the 13,000 products using WooCommerce's import/export feature, which took about three full days.

To minimize downtime during the launch, we've devised the following plan:

  1. Temporary Migration: Move the old website to our server and temporarily redirect the domain.
  2. New Site Setup: Migrate the new website to their server, configure settings, and conduct final testing.
  3. Domain Switch and Backup: Switch the domain back to their server and create a backup of the old site.

This approach involves multiple steps and potential wait times. I'm seeking advice on alternative migration strategies, such as manual migration or using a tool like Duplicator. Thanks a ton.

  1. Are you looking for tactical help on *how* to move the site logistically, in terms of what tools can do the job? Or are you looking for migration strategy help? Its difficult to tell from your post.

If its the latter, you are on the right track, but I would not do a hard A/B switch for a migration (using DNS). Use a load balancer to split the traffic between the old and new server. Do this slowly over time to ensure the new site can handle the load. This becomes more important as it seems you have a new UI, new hardware, and a new ERP integration to cope with. Don’t do a hard cut; get both sites running and slowly migrate.

PM if you have any questions.
