So I usually use elementor to make websites and I start with designing the desktop version first and then going my down to mobile version. My professor (teaches digital marketing) recommended to start from mobile version first and then go towards desktop version as more people view websites on mobile and this way you can optimise your website in a better way. Curious to how you guys proceed with the design?
I start with desktop, then remove or modify elements for mobile. I use Divi.
I do the header mobile first.
I mean I can imagine how the mobile header will look like so I do the desktop version accordingly.
Always largest view down. It doesn’t really work going the other direction. If someone has made a plausible case for going the other way I’d love to hear it.
mobile first.
Desktop first, always. It’s easier to adjust the mobile version than it is to try and plan for the desktop when starting mobile. Mobile is generally a single column, there’s not much layout to do compared to desktop. Do the desktop, look at the mobile, a lot of times the mobile doesn’t need much work at all.
Depends on the audience. If it’s B2B then I’ll almost always start on desktop since that’s where 90% of the traffic will come from. B2C I’ll focus more on mobile first since most people just use their phones now.
“Mobile first” is more of a design paradigm used to think about your design, as oppose to an actual implementation strategy. It relates more to structural decisions than simple styles. Elementor isn’t overly conducive to mobile first thinking, but it’s just a tool. I make heavy use of either a) fluid dimensions like vw, with clamp or b) designing in such a way that there are only flow differences between mobile and desktop. Working that way, 99% of the time the only styling differences are minimal, generally only things like column count. Everything else responds naturally and doesn’t require manual adjustments.
It’s one of those bullshit ideas that people use to sound clever. While in theory it makes sense to build ‘mobile first’ as it’s the most widely used screen size, in reality the mobile version is almost always a simplified version of the desktop design, so from a practical point of view it’s better to start with desktop and work down.
