The company I work for has a custom website which has been set up by a freelance web developer, and to be honest it desperately needs updating.
The issue is that it costs too much to get the website updated, and we don’t really have free reign over what we want to change, whenever we want.
I am confident that I can develop a much better website using wordpress.org, however I’m not sure how I would go about updating the website from the old to the new?
My idea at the moment is to create a dummy domain to build the WP website on, and once it’s complete we would need to migrate it across to the actual domain.
The other thing is, we’re using FastHosts at the moment, although I’m considering changing to DreamHost because it seems to be highly favored.
With this in mind, what is the method of seamlessly updating our website to a WP website, without much downtime of our domain?
**TL;DR -**

Apart from all the other things you’d need to do, you don’t definitely have to buy a new or temporary domain to start building new site and just an unused sub domain might get it done.
