Simple Author Box uses the WordPress core function to get the author URL and the URL returned ( ) looks like the default author URL.
If you have another plugin or the theme customizing the author page it might not be filtering the ‘author_link’ properly so that WordPress and by extension other plugins like Simple Author Box can know what the URL should be.

Aww crap. That means I have to manually disable all the plugins and re-enable them one at time.
