Need Advice on Updating a WordPress E-Commerce Site Without Affecting the Live Version

[ad_1]

Hello there!

I want to help a friend improve his WordPress e-commerce website. From what I understand, the current site was built using a very old template.

What we want to do is buy and import a theme from ThemeForest and start working on the new website without making any changes to the current one. From what I’ve read, this is called working in a staging environment, right?

Once we’re done working on the new website, we want to push it live.

With the new website (built with the new template), do I have to duplicate all existing pages (home page, products, contact us, etc.) and create new versions like “contact-us2”?

Do you have any advice on how to do this? We really don’t want to erase the current website by importing a new template.

Thanks!

  1. 1. Create a staging website and activate your theme. Remove all existing pages and add new ones, ensuring the page slugs on the staging site match those on the old website. Once the design is complete and ready to go live, copy your website from staging to the live environment.

Note: When you make your staging website live, it will replace and delete the current live website.

    2. Install WordPress on a new domain and start designing the website with your preferred theme. Import all products from the old website to the new one. After design is completed and website is ready to live migrate your website to your old domain.

Note: Ensure all your URLs and permalinks match those of the old website.
