new to wordpress, can I add third-party afflilate ads?

I’m switching over from Google Blogger (I know, finally…) and tried to add HTML from my existing ad affliliates, but they only show up on the site as the HTML rather than the ads. SImilarly, I wanted to add custom hyperlinked images to follow on Twitter and Facebook but I can’t get the hyperlink to actually link to those accounts/pages. Do I have to upgrade before I can access these features? Thanks in advance!
