New User Feeling lost with Gutenburg Editor

[ad_1]

Hello,

I come from a design background and know little HTML/CSS, and agreed to design a website for a friend. I have used editors such as Wix in the past and was quite surprised at how rigid WordPress’ Gutenburg editor is, as well as how restrictive the entire idea of a WordPress “theme” is (taking away finer control over a page’s typography and design).

Since I’m doing this out of the goodness of my heart I don’t really want to pay for an editor like Elementor. So does anyone have any suggestions for how I should approach this project?

  1. This is gonna sound blunt, but here goes. You agreed to DESIGN a site, not BUILD a site. If you’re not a developer, don’t try to develop, either have them hire someone to build it who IS a developer, or have them move to something you’re comfortable with, like Wix or Squarespace. The former is a best-attempt facelift for how the actual back end operates and was built, the latter is a ground-up from the back-end on, purpose-built visual composer.

WordPress, even with Elementor or Divi or whatever, is not a great solution for non-developers trying to actually build a site. You can get something close but it’s a *lot* more effort and won’t work very well in the grand scheme of things once it’s all said and done.
