Noob here!! 👋

Hello world!

I am a bit newer to the website design space. I’ve worked on building sites on Wix and Shopify in the past and am currently learning a bit in Webflow, but have not touch much of WordPress.

I have a client who is transferring marketing agencies and the old company needs to transfer hosting of their website. From the information I have now I believe they have a WordPress site. WordPress.com or built from the WordPress program itself I’m not sure.

What does it look like to transfer a website to another company? Would I need to get whichever WordPress they were using and just switch an admin email? Do I need something like hostinger and you just connect the site to it?

I apologize I wish I had a bit more baseline knowledge to ask more detailed questions but I’m working quickly to learn as much as possible.

  1. No offence, but this is a ridiculous task for someone that’s never done it before. Based on your questions you should not be transferring a website from one server to another, especially if it’s for a client/business with an active website where any downtime may mean lost revenue.

To transfer a website from one server to another you’re going to first need to know how to set up the new server/hosting where the website will be transferred to, and what sort of configuration is required (based on how their existing server is set up).

You’re also going to need to know whether they’re utilising any sort of other services connected to their existing server (e.g. email that may be being hosted on the server, unless they’re using an external service like Microsoft 365 or G Suite).

In addition to the above you need to either know how to manually backup a website and then restore it on another server, or be able to use some sort of backup plugin and then download/upload the provided files from the old server to the new server and run through that specific plugin’s installer to restore the website.

And finally how to point the existing domain at the new server via the domain’s DNS records.

My suggestion, you need to find someone that knows what they’re doing for this task. Please don’t just attempt it because you don’t want to admit it’s above your head. This is someone’s business (I presume) that you’re dealing with.

Really you should be learning this sort of stuff with your own websites before doing it for other people, either on your own server or in a local development environment on your own computer.
