Not tech savvy!

[ad_1]

So I just got this when trying to back up. I have a lot of updates that need to be done but it says not to update till I have backed up. I am not tech savvy at all. Should I just do the updates anyway? Does anyone have any suggestions?

  1. I’d be concerned with what that file is and how it got there.

It is in an uploads directory, which means it was either uploaded or perhaps put there for security.

.htaccess is a file that controls how a folder can be accessed and what can be done with it. (I’m perhaps oversimplifying, but that gets you the gist of why it might be there.) But this one has more to the name.

Sometimes users or hosting companies append an extension like that to convert it to a backup after making a change.

However, it still has the initial period before the name, and usually I think they remove that.

Is it possible someone could have uploaded this to the directory via an unprotected form?

I’d be very careful with it.

There are people around here who are much better at the server side than I am, but if this has just started and wasn’t there before, I’d be extra careful.

Maybe reach out to the wp forms support and ask if they’ve seen it before?

Maybe install the free Wordfence and run a scan just for extra security?
